Wow!!! What an amazing Christmas program!! Truly brilliant performances by the students of MDIS.
Grade 1 & 2 would like to thank Mrs Jung, Mr Pineda and Ms Andrews for their hard-work and effort. We just loved being Noah’s animals. Thank you also to Mrs Khan for our stunning animal masks and capes. Grade 1 & 2 looked awesome in their costumes.
Week 9 is BOOK WEEK for only Grades 1 & 2. We hope to have an entire day of reading, a week long read-a-thon competition (proceeds will go towards buying blankets for Christians in Orissa who are seeking shelter this winter in forests to escape persecution. We also hope to invite authors, publishers, guest readers and guest story- tellers to class. Stories from other cultures will also be read. We hope to have a book swap day too. Children can swap books with their classmates and read the book in class or take the book home with the child / parent’s prior permission.
If you would like to be part of BOOK WEEK please do let me know by email or phone latest by Thursday 11th of Dec, so I can slot you in for a time convenient to you. You could read a book, share your love of books, tell a story from your own culture, or just about anything related to books. We hope to conclude BOOK WEEK with a character parade on Friday the 19th of Dec. Your child could come dressed to school as a book character on that day. A program schedule for next week will be sent on Friday the 12th of Dec, highlighting various activities. Any queries or concerns please do let me know via email or telephone.

Memory verse
- Encourage your child to say this daily.
- Share with your child your understanding of the verse.
- On Fridays a memory verse test will be given.

Our focus this Semester are the Ten Commandments.
Reading Grade 1
Learning to read is one of the most important skills that we teach our children. You, as a parent/caregiver, can also help share in the fun. Read with your child the readers/poems [Friday] sent home. When reading with your child please be patient and always praise her/his efforts. The pictures are part of the decoding process, so please don’t cover them up. Remember to ask your child what the story was about and then ask a few questions to see if they have understood the text. This is a very important part of reading as without comprehension reading is meaningless. Remember to read every day. Reading other books to your child is a wonderful experience and reading to children helps them to learn to read. Don’t forget nursery rhymes, poems, fairy tales, Bible stories and traditional tales from your own culture and in your home language.
Maths. Grade 1
We are still looking at even and odd numbers, identifying pairs and writing numbers to 20 in words. Your child will be coming home with Wrap-up 6 – subtracting 2. Please encourage your child to learn the basic facts and for fun, time them as they do the basic facts. Aim is to do it in less than a min.
News. Grade 1
Class Reporter. Every child in Grade 1 will have a turn at being class story teller. Could you help your child to learn either in part, or all, of a well known story so that they are able to retell it to the class? (This is to be told, not written.) If this is too difficult for your child then he /she could recite 3 Nursery Rhymes. Please give your child time to practice at home in front of the family. Your input also helps them to appreciate the value of news and sharing news. If you have any concerns or queries please feel free to contact me. Tae Kwondo & Soccer: Tuesdays and Thursdays. Please ensure a comfortable t-shirt and shorts are brought to school on those days.
Spelling. Grade 1
Children will be tested on Fridays on their spelling words. Please practice the spelling words given. Make simple sentences with each word too.
